Rich Gallegos of Fremont knows living near a park motivates that person to enjoy the outdoors, keeps the person fit and healthy, and adds to the value of his property. But he can’t put a dollar figure on it.

“The parks are part of why I like living here,” Gallegos remarked on a rest break during a hike last weekend in Sunol Regional Wilderness as he took in the sight of green meadows, oak forests and a roaring creek. “How do you separate out the value of something so deeply integrated into our area?”
